Of course January is the time when the ‘new year, new me’ crowd are in full force, shunning gluten and sugar for fresh juices, green salads, clean protein and soups. Unashamedly joining the crowd, we searched for a lunch spot that differed from the indulgent offerings on our doorstep in Central London, happening upon Roots Juicery.
Initially, as we design geeks and creative types tend to be, we were attracted by their distinctive branding, reclaimed wooden floors and tables, and the individual design – the allure of some much-needed vitamins also drew us inside. Juices and milks in glass bottles are lined smartly in the fridge, ready to buy, each with simple and striking numbered branding that displays the key ingredients and makes it easy to remember your favourite, and their logo inventively incorporates the brand initials in a visual interpretation of the juicing process. We shouldn’t judge a juice by its bottle, but we do.
The cold-pressed juice bar offers healthy food and coffee in addition to its delicious juices and smoothies, ranging from wholesome breakfasts, vegan burgers and seasonal salads to nut milks and fruit concoctions – and a few sweet treats – all made freshly on site. Every ingredient is sourced as locally as possible, organic and the best quality available. Their powerful juice press extracts around 95% of the fruit and vegetables so having the best quality ingredients is paramount and you can be sure that you are getting the benefits of your five-a-day.
Founded in 2015 with the first branch opening in August of that year, Chantal Ward was already passionate about cold-pressed juicing and the health benefits she had seen firsthand in her time at the Living Light Raw Food Institute and Matthew Kenny’s Raw Food School in California. After a long search for the right premises, the Fitzrovia location was chosen due to its bright, open interior, central location and the space that was needed for everything to be produced on site; they are the only juicery in Central London to do this. When not pressing fresh juices for Roots growing customer base, Chantal can be found working on new recipes, developing the ever-changing menu to ensure that seasonal, fresh and quality ingredients are always the focus. We can see this becoming a go-to lunch spot, even when we’ve fallen off the ‘new year, new me’ wagon.
