Hugh music

Listen To Hugh.

Hugh isn’t the frontman of this London band. There isn’t actually anyone named Hugh. Joshua, Andy, Tino and Izzy form the four-piece lineup whose sound was described by The Guardian as “soothing, sultry and subtly disconcerting soulful electronic pop”.

A chance encounter in 2014 between lead singer and songwriter Joshua Idehen and producer Andy Highmore, while one tried to Shazam a song in a bar, was the first falling domino that led to the band’s formation. Teaming with Tino Kolarides on guitar and Izzy Brooks, whose vocals are employed alongside Joshua’s, the foursome created their EP – ‘I Can’t Figure You Out’ – and a sophisticated sound that is deep, dreamy and damn good.

Hugh musicAfter catching the ears of Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and Annie Mac, they released single ‘Learn To Fall’ which blends the hypnotic, electronic and emotive style with the contrasting vocals of Izzy and Joshua. The pair have the kind of jarring but symbiotic vocal relationship that makes bands like The XX and The Magic Numbers so perfect.

Following recent headline appearances in London and Berlin, we were hooked. The references or comparisons as far flung as Soul II Soul, London Grammar, The XX and Beach House, make it hard pinpoint a genre for Hugh, but it’s definitely a genre that’s missing from your playlist.

Hugh’s new single ‘This Is How It Starts’ is out now.
